The School

Christchurch Boys’ High School, founded in 1881, has a number of distinctive features which taken together give the School its particular character. It is a state school for boys with a roll of approximately 1350 students; its pupils and former pupils have established strong traditions and a reputation for high achievement.

The School believes that individuals are important and values each pupil whatever his abilities and his interests. While the School continues to expect the highest of academic standards from the able, it works to increase the efforts and lift the attainment of all the boys.

The School believes in high standards and in pursuit of excellence - in academic work, in sport and culture, in discipline and behaviour and in service to others.

The School is aware that its pupils are going to live their lives in a world that is rapidly changing. For Christchurch Boys’ High School, there is the challenge to establish in its pupils a love of learning and to encourage the humanity, the tolerance and the sense of service, which the world is going to need.

Facilities

The school well provided with excellent facilities and equipment. As well as a modern Library and School Hall complex, there is a wide range of specialised laboratories, art studios, a music suite, technical workshops, and four computer suites. The school has a weights training centre, two gymnasiums and an all-weather training pitch.

Academic Programme

The course structure is designed to cater for all boys, whatever their learning background or level of ability. All students are prepared for the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) in Years 11, 12 and 13. Accelerant and extension classes operate at all levels.

We are also the only school in the South Island to offer Cambridge International Courses.

Outdoor Pursuits

This is a senior course, the emphasis is on developing skills and knowledge in a range of outdoor pursuits to provide an opportunity for personal and social growth and development, and to develop an understanding and appreciation of the natural environment.

Term Structure for 2011

Note: The usual length of each school term has been adjusted for 2011.
Terms 1 and 2 are slightly longer that usual, and Term 4 is two weeks shorter. This adjustment has been made to align the October Term holiday with the final stages of the 2011 Rugby World Cup tournament.
