My Time at Christchurch Boys' High School 2003-2005

I came to Christchurch Boys' High School as an adventurous gold digger tries to pursue the western culture and the language. Academically, Boys’ High offers a great range of subjects for students; sometimes when I had language difficulty with my school work, the teacher would sit next to me and discuss the problem in detail until I fully understood. Most teachers take their own time to tutor their student free. With their help and trust, I had the confidence to do Year 13 English while I could barely understand English at Year 11. I returned my teachers good results and that’s all they expected from a student in CBHS.

International students are very talented in Boys’ High; we contribute to the school in many aspects: sports, music, academic and social events. If you have a talent, you can always find opportunities to show it in Boys’ High. The International Office helps overseas students with anything. It was through this office, I met my NZ mum, Margaret who has been my Guardian for three years.

If school is 50% of my best experiences in NZ, homestay is the other half. School tries to find the best homestay for every international student. I have had so many happy times with my homestays and I still keep contact with them. They have made me feel at home and I hardly ever felt home sick.

In Boys’ High, our international committee is like a big family, and Ms Hames is the mother of all these kids and she cares and is responsible for us. She tries her best to make us fit into Boys’ High and always arranges some social activities for us to enjoy. Skiing trip, ice-skating, international festival......

I have deeply enjoyed my time at Boys’ High. I was lucky to have so many teachers that would spend their own time to help me; and have made many life long friends that shared the same goal with me; so many mother-like people that care about me and allowed me never to feel lonely.

Recently I received a scholarship for $18,000 USD to go to USA for my tertiary education. Before I go, I want to thank Boys’ High and all these people that have trusted me and helped me in the past, without you people I could not have achieved so much. Thank you!
