Maadi Cup rowing nationals.
This year’s Maadi Cup rowing nationals was the biggest in many years with competitor
numbers up by 26% with over 2000 entrants. This is the biggest secondary schools
event in the southern hemisphere and the level of competition continues to get
harder every year.
The CBHS rowing team sent its largest squad in recent years, with 30 rowers
competing at Maadi Cup. The squad had a great regatta with 2 bronze medals won by
the U15 Double of Josh Rodger and Tom Calder plus the Novice 18 Double of Jesse
Forsyth and Jared van Vianen. The U17 four also just missed out on a medal by 0.15
of a second in a closely fought race.
We had 10 out of 13 crews all competing in A finals which places them all in the top
8 in New Zealand for each event. All the boys were competing in A finals in at least
one event which shows the depth of the squad.
Following the regatta Tom Clyma and Liam Smith were also awarded South Island under
18 trials which will take place 19-21 April at Twizel.
Many thanks go to the coaching team, head coach Todd Petherick, assistants Logan
Keys (who has just made the NZ U23 team), Sam Waghorn, Francie Turner and Rivo
Kaidme. Thanks also to all the parents and committee for all their hard work and
support over the season. The rowing group is growing strongly and is set to produce
some fantastic results over the next few years.
This year’s squad of 45 boys now get a well deserved break. There will be some
winter training commencing in term 3 for returning rowers. Details will be advised
to those boys.
For new and interested rowers there will be “have a go” days in September followed
by an information evening for boys and parents. Any boys interested in rowing should
contact the Teacher in Charge of Rowing who is Mrs Chaplin, email is
chaplins@staff.cbhs.school.nz.
There will be competition for places in the squad so boys will need to ensure that
they turn up fit and ready to go at the start of the season.
Rowing awards for this season went to the following boys:
Most Improved Novice: Kieran Petherbridge. Our smallest team member, Kieran
has shown good development this season in coxing the U15 8+ at Maadi Cup and
also pushing the #2 U17 4+ into the A final at Maadi.
Most Improved Returning Rower: Angus Coull. Taking a noticeable step up this
season Angus worked his way into our top 4+ this season producing some great
performances.
Best Novice Rower: (Joint) Jesse Forsyth & Jared Van Vianen. Taking a
surprise 3rd place at Maadi Cup in the U18 Novice 2x demonstrates the
potential that these two powerhouse lads have.
Contribution to Rowing: Liam Smith. One of the few rowers at CBHS recently
to have completed four years of rowing and has been one of our consistently
good performers, making our top 8+ in each of the last two seasons and top
4+ this past season as well.
School awards: The following rowing awards will be presented in an assembly
at school later in the year, with a trophy for each.
S.H. Francis Cup for Junior Oarsman of the Year: Josh Rodger.
Josh has once again put in some good performances this season and (along
with Tom Calder) picked up one of our two medals at Maadi Cup in the U15 2x
and showed noticeable improvement on last year in both skill level and
testing results.
Simon Briggs Trophy for Most Promising Coxswain: Eddie Palmer.
Eddie has shown continued improvement this season, once again coxing our top
4+ and 8+
John Hunter Trophy for Senior Oarsman of the Year: Tom Clyma.
Tom has earned a South Island U18 trial after making the team last year.
Again Tom has also been our top performer on the erg this season and rowed
in our top 2-, 4+ and 8+.
Margaret Forbes Cup for Captain of Rowing: Henry Lissaman.
Henry has continued his hard work and continues to set an example for others
to follow. He has grown in leadership this season and will continue to do so
in the future. I'm also pleased to announce that as Henry has another year
of rowing with us, he will continue next season as Rowing Captain.
