Christchurch Boys High School has a long and valued tradition in Hockey. National success started in 1944 with CBHS winning the Premier National Secondary School Boys Tournament – The Rankin Cup. Since then, CBHS 1st XI has won Rankin 18 times, most recently in 2010. In addition, CBHS has produced numerous national and provincial representative players, including several New Zealand Olympic Hockey players, such as the current 2012 Black Stick player; Nick Haig.
CBHS Hockey encourages and welcomes players of all skill levels, from National Representative players to those who have never played before. We aim to develop and extend the boys' hockey skills through high quality coaching and a hockey camp in the school holidays. Tailored pre-season training is available for those intending to trial for senior teams. Trials process usually occurs from February/March and dates will be advertised in school notices and on the hockey calendar. The coaches will be focussing on assessing player's fitness, stick and ball skills and game skills. Younger boys of high skill level will be provided a pathway to match their abilities and attitude.
The Hockey season generally runs from April to the end of September. The teams play in a series of Hockey championships throughout the season, including the pre season Super 6, South Island Super 6, Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) Championships, and Porritt Cup competitions.
CBHS have a series of annual fixtures with other prominent boys' schools including games against: Timaru Boys High School, Otago Boys High School and Wellington Boys College.
The 1st XI also competes in National Hockey Competitions held during Winter Sports Week in Term 3.
Members of the CBHS Hockey club are required to pay a registration fee which covers CHA team entry fees, artificial turf usage, coaching, provision of Hockey uniform-shirt and shorts and protective Goalie gear. The CBHS Hockey club has endeavoured to minimise the impact of registration fees, and several fundraising activities are held throughout the year to contribute to CBHS Hockey. To deliver the quality hockey programme that the Club aspires to, support and voluntary effort is needed from Players and parents.
