School
Welcome to Christchurch Boys' High School.
We have 129 years experience
educating boys to be fine young men. They excel across a wide range of
academic, sporting and cultural fields. We value tradition, we
honour excellence, we teach values and we celebrate success in a school
environment that cares for student welfare, recognises cultural diversity and
meets the learning needs of a wide range of students.
We have a long record of scholarship that was extended recently by two of our students being awarded a New Zealand Scholar as well as many other top awards in national and international academic competitions We have in place a wide range of programmes that support the learning of students of all abilities. We make a difference to all our young men's academic achievement.
We have a strong tradition in sporting excellence and participation. Junior students are expected to participate and some may, when they reach the senior school, go on to either represent their country, win a national team’s event or take a national title in a wide range of sports. Some are even ranked internationally. In a typical year we have about 100 such students.
Our strength in developing the well-rounded young man is added to by our range of cultural activity. Orchestras, Concert bands, Jazz bands, Rock bands, Choirs and Chamber Music are all well supported and excel. Barbershop quartets, Shakespeare productions, Senior and Junior plays, Debating and Theatresports add to the cultural mix. In recent years Gold, Silver and Bronze medals at regional and island competitions have been gained. The Kapahaka group is a feature in our school.
Personal development is an emphasis. Students are encouraged to develop the personal qualities necessary to participate in society after leaving school. Good dress, good presentation, good attitude, good manners, good communication skills and a good balance to life are constantly reinforced. Many leadership opportunities and team activities develop self esteem and confidence in working and interacting with others. Our pastoral care team is a very supportive group who support and guide our students through mistakes and troubles in a very caring a positive way. However, there are consequences to reinforce correct and acceptable behaviour.
Our school is a very energetic place with staff, students, parents and Old Boys committing an enormous amount of their time to ensuring that the students have the opportunity, learning and guidance to make them active and valuable members of a Global Society.
