Literacy Project

For the next two years Christchurch Boys' High School will be involved in the Secondary Literacy Project with the Ministry of Education.

The project is being overseen by researchers at the Woolf Fisher Research Centre who are providing the academic and theoretical knowledge underpinning literacy development amongst the group of schools involved in the project. Local support for the project is provided by University of Canterbury Education Plus facilitators who are working with the school at a practical level.

This project is an inquiry based approach to assessing literacy and using that data at a professional development level to enhance classroom based learning. The project involves, in the first stages, assessing every Year 9 and Year 10 student using an on-line reading assessment tool known as e-asTTle.

This data, along with other qualitative and quantitative data, will then be used to deliver a range of professional development initiatives to teaching staff before reassessing students to gauge their progress.
