Actions from previous minutes
Health & Safety
Mark Gibbs introduced the draft policy he had circulated to the PTA.
The policy was then adopted (Ian McKenzie/Trish Wells) by the meeting. First
aid procedures, training and possible sign-in procedures for volunteers were
raised. The PTA H&S committee (Mark, Joe, Sharon, Rose, Russell) is to
discuss these and Liaise with the school/Board of Trustees Property and H &
S Committee.

Drinking fountains
Paul to follow up on/with request to Student Council to locate existing
fountains on a plan of the school and suggest where new ones are needed.
These can then perhaps be incorporated in the new building contract.

Hot Tips for Parents presentations
Numbers looking ok. Reminder went home to yr 9 & 10. Joe has not pursued
PTA sponsorship of hall hire.
Wish List
Good liaison needed with PTA so that request for funds in the new year is not a
surprise to the new PTA. See the note from the last meeting (PTA to make
recommendations on expenditure to Headmaster by October each year. Whole school
expenditure can then be considered by Board of Trustees and request/discussion
on use of PTA funds held at PTA December meeting. PTA treasurer could attend
Board Finance Committee meeting).
Items raised at the meeting for consideration are:
- Flags for sporting events (sell at the canteen as fund raiser?)
- Support for literacy mentoring program
Note: Ian has looked back at other meetings/emails and found the following
ideas/agreements:
- Lockers ($2000 at April 2003 meeting)
- Drinking fountains
- Fridge magnets with school contact numbers
- Sponsoring "Living with Teenagers" pamphlet ($1 each) to all yr 9 families
- Programme preparing yr 13 for going flatting/university/polytechnic,
leases, student loans, enrolling
Sale of Coca Cola
This subject was debated again with pros and cons of prohibition identified.
There seems to be anecdotal evidence of affect on children. Trevor advised that
the experience at Timaru Boys was that when sale at school was stopped, boys
brought large bottles from home and this led to problems in class and
deliberate bursting of bottles in bags.
The motion "That the PTA stop selling Coca Cola at the canteen and ask the
school to stop sales from dispensers" was lost.
Literacy mentor Programme
Joe’s suggested "Mentor Programme for Literacy and Writing" was supported in
principle. Trevor has a staff member working on a programme and the two ideas
are to be brought together next month.

Quantum and style of reward are to be given more thought. Reward may not
necessarily be financial. Any increase to the $10 PTA donation should be
considered carefully as the school "fee" is already one of the highest in Chch.

Treasurer
Only change this month due to $181 from interest on accounts.
Headmaster
Newsletter closes 14 October. Jonathan Stockwell is the Student representative
to the Board of Trustees.
Design of Caldwell Block alterations is underway, tenders for construction to
be called before Christmas so that work can be completed over the Christmas
break. Food Technology Block will proceed later next year.
Discussions on roll and funding are continuing with the Ministry of Education;
school currently 2.7 classrooms under code, so clear need for more.
Celia Lashlie was interviewed recently on ‘Face to Face with Kim Hill’. Celia
spoke well on boys & boys schools. Celia knows that Trevor is now at CBHS
and she wants to come to the school. Trevor will organise this during the term,
parents, boys and staff to be invited.

(Note from May PTA meeting - "Celia Lashlie’s link with Nelson College,
Timaru Boys High & 3 other high schools was mentioned. Perhaps this can be
pursued further with Trevor McIntyre when he starts as Head Master")
There was a Powhiri today, farewelling Trevor from Timaru Boys High &
welcoming him to CBHS. This was a unique experience for Trevor and for
Christchurch Boys High School.
Board of Trustees
Debbie advised the meeting that:
- The Board has Finance, Personnel, Property/Health and Safety, Adams House
and Discipline committees which meet monthly.
- Has appointed the new Headmaster this year
- Is progressing the building project for new school facilities
- Looks after the budget with a very comprehensive process and employs
Accountant Teresa Harris.
- Is assessing how the board can use its time most effectively – planning for
boys learning, policy development etc
- All BOT members are now listed on the school website
http://www.cbhs.school.nz/family/board/ with contact details - perhaps
these could also go in the newsletter

- Nigel Barnett Chair until end of year, Debbie (currently vice-chairperson)
then takes over.
Hostel
134 boys in the Hostel. Hostel was booked over the holidays.
Diane passed on the request for 20 to 25 chairs to be purchased by the PTA for
the hostel and school use. When the hostel is hired out, chairs often have to
be hired separately. (hire for leavers dinner cost $1,600).
The meeting adopted the motion (Trisha Wells/Diane Taylor) "That 25 chairs be
purchased by the PTA at an approximate cost of $92 each"
