Scholarships/Awards available for leaving Year 13 Students
(This applies to New Zealand permanent residents only)
- Sir Arthur Sims Scholarships
-
Established by Lady Sims in memory of her late husband, Sir Arthur Sims,
himself an old boy and generous benefactor of Christchurch Boys’ High
School. Available to students intending to study a degree course at Lincoln
University. The award of these scholarships are conditional on gaining
Level 3 NCEA 60 credits in achievement and/or unit standards over 3, 4 or 5
subjects. This is a supplement to other scholarships including Sports
Scholarships. These scholarships may be continued in subsequent years
provided satisfactory academic performance is maintained. Value is $1000.00
- $1500.00 for 2010.

- John Wilson Memorial Scholarships

Established by Mrs D M F Wilson in memory of her son John. Awarded to
student/students intending to study Science in at the University of
Canterbury. It is intended to include computing and engineering
(intermediate) provided there is a good Science component. Value $2000.00
for 2010.

- A N V Dobbs Memorial Scholarships

Available to students who are about to enter university. Preference is
given to those studying for the Bachelor of Commerce degree. This
Scholarship will be awarded for the first three years provided satisfactory
academic performance is maintained. Value $3000.00 for 2011.

- Lonsdale Scholarships
-
Scholarships will be awarded to first year students at the University of
Canterbury on the results of the NCEA Level 3 who have attended a secondary
school in Canterbury for three years. Scholarships will only be awarded in
cases of financial hardship and applicants will be means tested. Tenable
for up to three years. Value $750.00 per annum.

- Clark Boyce Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000. It is awarded annually to the
student of Christchurch Boys’ High School who gains the highest mark in
English in the Level 3 NCEA end of year examinations and is proceeding to
do Law at University. Where a student is not doing Year 13 English in the
year of the award his other subjects will be considered for their relevance
to likely succeed in law papers - eg classical studies history. Value
$1500.00 for 2010.
- Asia 2000 David Holborow Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded for undergraduate study by a New Zealand
student of Korean descent. This scholarship can be reapplied for in
subsequent years. Value of the Scholarship is $3000.00 for 2011.

- J F Moffat Scholarship

Established in 1987 by an old boy John F Moffat. Mr J F Moffat was pupil
and Monitor and a senior teacher in Chemistry and Mathematics at
Christchurch Boys’ High School. The scholarship is awarded to a student who
intends studying Chemistry at the University of Canterbury. This
scholarship is awarded following the NCEA Level 3 examination results.
- Bickerton Widdowson Trust Awards

This award was established in 1950 for students of Christchurch Boys’ High
School proceeding to a tertiary institution. It is awarded to students who
receive a scholarship in the NCEA Level 3 examinations. Value $1000.00 per
scholarship 2010.
- A D Tench Awards

Established in the memory of Anthony Duncan Tench an old boy for students
taking a Science Course (pure science, engineering medicine) at a New
Zealand University. Up to three awarded annually. Value for 2010 is
$1000.00 each. The awards are awarded following the NCEA Level 3
examination results.
- David Close Awards
-
Established in 2001 in recognition of the contribution Councillor David
Close (a former staff member of Christchurch Boys’ High School) made to the
City during his time on Council from October 1977 to his retirement in
2000. The award is intended to encourage local students to consider
tertiary education which may then lead to employment in local government.
In particular those students who face personal or financial challenges are
especially urged to apply. Value of the Scholarship for 2010 is $4000.00.
Enrolment is required at the University of Canterbury, Lincoln University
or the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. Three awards are
awarded annually.
