Last weekend, three Boys’ High athletes were involved in two days of Decathlon, or Octathlon competition at Nga Puna. Two gruelling days of competition saw the boys complete either eight events – Octathlon, or ten events – Decathlon.
Year 12 student Beau Brackenridge was the winner of the South Island Octathlon competition, after a dominant performance throughout. In all, Beau won five of the events on offer, with a huge PB of 43.36m in the Discus a notable performance.
Asher Pettengell-Brand is another year 12 student who performed well. Asher contested the New Zealand U18 Decathlon Championship where he eventually finished up with the silver medal. Asher dominated the track events, winning the 100m, 400m, 110m Hurdles and 1500m, as well winning one of his specialist events the Long Jump. Finishing with a score of 5191 points, this was a great first up performance for Asher in the Combined Events format.
Eli Leifi was the third of our CBHS athletes to compete, stepping up to the Under 20 Decathlon, after a silver medal in the Under 18 the previous year. In what was a hotly contested contest for the podium positions, Eli did well throughout the weekend against some quality competition, eventually missing out on the bronze medal by a small margin.
His score of 5242 points, comfortably eclipsed his previous best for the Decathlon set in 2020.
All three of the boys have a big six weeks ahead in terms of Athletics, culminating in the South Island Schools’ Athletics in Christchurch at the end of March.
