Food and Nutrition
At Christchurch Boys’ High School, we recognise the vital role of food and nutrition in supporting students’ overall wellbeing, academic performance, and physical health. We are committed to promoting healthy eating habits and providing students with the knowledge they need to make informed nutritional choices.
Promoting Healthy Eating
We encourage students to adopt a balanced diet based on the principles of the Ministry of Health’s Eating and Activity Guidelines for New Zealand. This includes:
- Consuming a variety of vegetables and fruits every day.
- Choosing whole grains and high-fibre foods.
- Including lean protein sources like fish, chicken, eggs, legumes, and nuts.
- Limiting foods high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats.
- Staying hydrated with plenty of water.
Healthy LunchboxesHealthy Lunchboxes
A nutritious lunch helps students stay focused and energised throughout the day. We recommend that lunchboxes include:
- Fresh fruit or vegetables for snacks.
- A wholegrain sandwich, wrap, or salad for a balanced main meal.
- Dairy products such as yoghurt or cheese for calcium intake.
- Water as the primary drink.
School Canteen Options
Our school canteen supports healthy eating by offering a variety of nourishing meal and snack options. We strive to align our menu with nutritional guidelines, ensuring students have access to food that fuels their learning and activities.
Nutrition Education
Through the health and physical education curriculum, students learn about:
- The importance of a balanced diet for long-term health.
- How to read and understand food labels.
- Meal planning and preparation skills.
These lessons are reinforced with practical activities, such as cooking classes and workshops, to instil lifelong healthy habits.

Community Collaboration
We collaborate with local health organisations, nutritionists, and community groups to promote healthy eating initiatives, such as lunchbox challenges and awareness campaigns. Together, we aim to foster a culture of mindful and healthy eating within our school community.
Encouraging Whānau Involvement
We invite whānau to partner with us in supporting students’ nutritional needs. By providing balanced meals at home and reinforcing the importance of healthy choices, we can work together to create positive habits that last a lifetime.
