Mental Health

At Christchurch Boys’ High School, we prioritise the mental health and wellbeing of our students as a foundation for their success and happiness. Adolescence is a time of significant change and growth, and we are committed to providing a supportive environment where students can develop resilience, build positive relationships, and seek help when needed.

Supporting Mental Wellbeing

We understand the challenges young people face, including academic pressures, social changes, and personal challenges. Our approach to mental health focuses on:
  • Fostering Connection: Encouraging strong peer relationships, open communication, and a sense of belonging within the school community.
  • Building Resilience: Equipping students with tools to cope with stress, adapt to change, and face challenges with confidence.
  • Encouraging Self-Care: Promoting healthy habits such as regular exercise, good nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices.

On-Site Support Services

Our dedicated team of professionals is here to provide guidance and assistance to students experiencing mental health challenges. These services include:

  • Counselling: Confidential, one-on-one support to help students navigate personal and emotional challenges.
  • Pastoral Care Team: Teachers and staff trained to provide ongoing support and referrals as needed.
  • Peer Mentoring: Senior students offering guidance and a listening ear to younger students, fostering a culture of support and understanding.

Mental Health Education

Mental health education is integrated into our curriculum to help students develop awareness and skills to manage their wellbeing. Topics include:
  • Recognising the signs of stress, anxiety, and depression.
  • Strategies for managing emotions and building healthy coping mechanisms.
  • The importance of seeking help and reducing stigma around mental health.

Community Partnerships

We collaborate with local organisations, including Youthline, 1737 Need to Talk?, and The Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, to provide additional resources and support for students and their whānau.

Recognising When to Seek Help

It’s important for students to know that seeking help is a sign of strength. We encourage anyone feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or isolated to reach out to a trusted adult, a teacher, or a member of the pastoral care team.

For Whānau

Whānau play a crucial role in supporting students’ mental health. We offer resources and workshops to help parents and caregivers understand the challenges their tamariki may face and how to support them effectively.

Resources for Immediate Support

If urgent help is needed, the following services are available 24/7:

  • 1737 Need to Talk?: Free call or text 1737 to speak with a trained counsellor.

By working together as a school, whānau, and community, we can create an environment where every student feels supported and valued.

For more information or to access support, please contact the school office or speak with a member of our pastoral care team.
