Safety, Violence & Prevention

Safety and Violence Prevention

At Christchurch Boys’ High School, we prioritise creating a safe and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. Our approach to safety and violence prevention is rooted in mutual respect, open communication, and proactive support for students and their whānau.

Building a Culture of Respect

We foster a culture that values manaakitanga and inclusion. Through our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) framework, we encourage students to demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers, and their school community. By modelling respectful behaviours, we aim to prevent bullying, harassment, and any forms of violence.

Prevention Programmes and Initiatives

Our school integrates evidence-based programmes to promote safety and prevent violence. These include:
  • Restorative Practices: Encouraging open dialogue to resolve conflicts and rebuild trust.
  • Digital Citizenship Education: Helping students navigate the online world responsibly, recognising and addressing cyberbullying.
  • Peer Support Programmes: Senior students mentor younger students, fostering connection and guidance.

Recognising and Responding to Concerns

We actively encourage students to report any incidents of concern, whether physical, emotional, or online. Our dedicated pastoral care team provides immediate support and guidance, ensuring every situation is handled with confidentiality and care.

Collaborating with Whānau and Community

Safety extends beyond the school gates. We work closely with whānau, local organisations, and agencies like Oranga Tamariki and the NZ Police to ensure students have a robust support network. Together, we address issues of violence and ensure students have the tools to manage challenges both within and outside school.

Support Services

Students in need of additional help can access:
  • Counselling Services: Available on-site to provide emotional and mental health support.
  • Wellbeing Resources: Tailored materials and workshops on managing stress, conflict, and maintaining positive relationships.

Taking Action Together

By working collaboratively with students, staff, whānau, and the wider community, we are committed to upholding a safe and nurturing school environment. Violence in any form is unacceptable, and together, we can prevent it.
