ESOL International Programme

At Christchurch Boys’ High School, we offer comprehensive support for students learning English as an additional language through our dedicated English Language classes.

Upon arrival, students' English proficiency is assessed according to the Ministry of Education’s English Language Learning Progressions (ELLP), which consist of Foundation, Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, and Stage 4. Based on this assessment, students are placed in appropriate English Language classes to help them succeed both academically and socially.

English Language Classes

  • Year 9 & 10: 9 & 10ESL – English for Speakers of Other Languages (Foundation to Stage 3 ELLP) – 3 hours per week plus mainstream English.
  • Year 11, 12 & 13: Senior students participate in multiple classes depending on their needs:
    • 12ESL – English for Speakers of Other Languages (Stage 2 ELLP) – 4 hours per week.
    • 12EAP – English for Academic Purposes (Stage 3 ELLP) – 4 hours per week.
    • 13EAP – English for Academic Purposes (Stage 4 ELLP) – 4 hours per week.

The goal of our classes is to equip students with the necessary language skills to manage learning within the New Zealand Curriculum, enabling them to become confident, connected, and active life-long learners.

Senior Students and NCEA

Long-term Year 12 students work towards the New Zealand National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Levels 1 and 2, with a focus on English Language standards and Level 1 Literacy standards, if necessary. In Year 13, students focus on NCEA Level 3 and University Entrance Literacy, with some also working towards the New Zealand Certificate in English Language (NZCEL) as an alternative to NCEA.

This structured approach ensures that all international students have the support they need to succeed in both language proficiency and academic achievement.
