Joint CBHS-St Margaret’s Korfball
On the weekend of 31 October – 1 November, at Pioneer Stadium in Christchurch, a combined CBHS-St Margaret’s Korfball team competed in the South Island Secondary School Championships
Korfball is a fast game for a team of eight (4 men and 4 women on the court at the time) With similarities between netball and basketball a team tries to score goals in a 3.5m high netless basket. CBHS is in the second year of competition, where they have combined with St Margaret’s College to form a team.
Pool play was exciting, resulting in three victories and only one loss in a close fought match against Middleton Grange, who eventually went on to win the completion – Middleton Grange 11-15, Cashmere (3) 21-1, Avonside-Shirley (2) 19-3 and Westland HS 12-1. These results qualified CBHS-St Margarets for the Section 1 top 8 playoffs on the final day of competition but a loss to Hillmorton HS in the QF ended the teams top 4 ambitions.
In the play-offs for 5th – 8th a good win first up qualified CBHS-St Margarets for the 5th/6th play-off match against Avonside Girls-SBHS. On paper the opposition looked far stronger with many New Zealand age-group players. Avonside-SBHS dominated early and quickly established a 5-goal lead. Excellent defence, determination and great team work allowed the team to fight back and take the lead for the first time in the match with just one minute remaining on the clock. At the final whistle CBHS-St Margarets lead 17-16 and claimed 5th place.
