New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletic Nationals Titles

The NZSS Athletics Nationals were held in Tauranga from 11th – 13th December 2020. A strong CBHS team of 26 athletes made the journey north with some good prospects over a number of events at junior and senior level.
The cancellation of both the Canterbury and South Island Secondary School events meant that the boys had minimal championship experience going in to the event with the majority of the squad selected post the CBHS athletics and sports day. A number of the squad had been competing for their clubs at Nga Puna Wai over the summer.
There were some fantastic results achieved over the three days, highlighted by two national titles at junior level – Levi Murdoch in the junior boys high jump and the 4x400m junior relay team (Ollie Singleton, Sacha Tahi, Asher Pettengell-Brand and Jordan Veitch) defended the 2019 national title that was won by CBHS in Wellington. Levi became the first CBHS high jumper in 48 years to win a gold medal at a national event and it was fitting that Terry Lomax, who was our last student to win a high jump gold, was there to present Levi with his medal. A special mention to Will Chunn for gaining 3rd place in the senior boys 100m and to Asher and Levi for receiving four medals at the meet.
Other podium placings were achieved by:
Levi Murdoch – 2nd Junior Long Jump, 3rd Junior Triple Jump Asher Pettengell-Brand – 2nd Junior 200m, 2nd Junior Hurdles Jordan Veitch – 2nd Junior 400m Will Chunn – 3rd Senior 100m
Asher Petengell-Brand, Ollie Singleton, Jordan Veitch and Levi Murdoch – 2nd 4 x 100m Junior Boys
A great weekend away for CBHS Athletics. A number of Personal Bests and outstanding performances see the CBHS athletics programme well placed for the future.
