This year, Christchurch Boys’ sent two teams to the annual Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival, held on Saturday, 9th April at Middleton Grange. Each school entering in the competition has the opportunity to enter two teams: a five-minute scene, and a fifteen-minute scene. The five-minute team, performing Julius Caesar act IV scene III, was comprised of Kayden Leftly and Tom Gibson, both year 13 students. The fifteen-minute team, performing a scene from The Tempest, was comprised of Michael Walker, Faraj Abassi, Matt Horn, James Whelan, Alex Whelan and Jamie Wyeth. The five-minute scene went for a succession, modern business style whereas the fifteen-minute scene, directed by drama teacher Tegan Patrick, stayed faithful to Shakespeare’s classical style. Among the other schools performing were Cashmere High, Middleton Grange, Christ’s College, and Hornby High, with a wide variety of scenes, from Hamlet to Othello.
The fifteen-minute scene came away with the Best Supporting Actor prize for Year 9 student, Jamie Wyeth, and Best Teacher Director for Tegan Patrick. The five-minute group won the Best Five-Minute Scene, and thus have been invited to the national competition in Wellington, commencing from the 2nd till the 6th of June. This is an immense achievement for the boys and is a great way to begin their final year at CBHS. The boys from both teams are immensely proud of their achievements and are already looking forward to next year’s performance!
