Educating fine young men towards outstanding achievement

Christchurch Boys' High School

Headmaster’s Message

CBHS is a school with strong values, high expectations and caring relationships. We have a history of over 130 years of educating boys to be fine young men and central to this mission is installing in our boys the courage to act in defence of others.

One of the very first acts a student at CBHS undertakes is to enter the school Hall and walk under the carved image of Ngāi Tahu chief Tautahi. This act is symbolic of the fact that CBHS students are part of something bigger than themselves and they are part of a community, within the rohe of Ngāi Tūāhuriri, that has a proud and continuing legacy.

We strive to develop academic success and moral strength and our boys are supported towards these outcomes through extensive cultural and sporting opportunities.

Our history includes Old Boys who have made their mark in the worlds of the military, the arts and culture, commerce, law, community service and sport. We have close ties with our very supportive and active community and we are proud of our place in New Zealand education. Our school is situated on land that has been both a Ngai Tahu settlement and part of the Deans family farm. CBHS is a place significant to Canterbury.

The staff of Christchurch Boys’ High School share a vision of standing alongside our students and supporting them to high standards of performance and character.

Christchurch Boys’ High School is a warm and energetic place with staff, students, parents and Old Boys working positively together with a strong sense of purpose and identity.
